Most of us know someone who battled with breast cancer, whether it was in our family, or circle of friends and acquaintances. We feel hopeful when we hear of survivors who fought the disease and won. Among this triumphant group are women who utilized preventative measures to beat the cancer.

Research has shown that early detection of breast cancer can save lives. During the month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness month is observed. It is a time when women are reminded to commit to a preventive healthcare plan.

Things you should know:

- Early detection is important. The majority of breast changes are discovered by women themselves.

- Schedule an annual exam and perform monthly breast self exams (BSE). Your physician should refer you for a mammogram.

- The National Cancer Institute recommends that women age 40 years and older have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years.

- Low-dose mammography is an important tool in detecting breast cancer and increasing the survival rate of women with breast cancer.

- Starting at age 20 exams by your physician should be done at least every 3 years and every year after the age of 40.

- Women under the age of 40 with a family history of breast cancer should speak with their physicians regarding the time to obtain their first mammograms.
